Edinburgh, The Clan MacLeod Society, 1979, p. 201.
He was probably the eldest son. His daughter Mary, [Watson, GAELIC
SONGS OF MARY MACLEOD.] states in her poetry that she was nursed in
Ullinish by "brown haired Flora, daughter of Lachaln", who was a
dairymaid of Sir Rory mor MacLeod o fDunvegan. An analogous situation
occurs in the island of Berneray in the following century, where Alice,
daughter of William MacLeod of Berneray (later in Luskintyre) was
fostered in the house of a subtenant Alexander Mac Rory (MacLeod).
Despite counter claims in Harris tradition, these considerations indicate
that Mary, the bardess, was born in Skye and that her father was
tacksman of Ullinish at the time. Alexander (or Alasdair Ruaidh) was
married and had issue.
