Alexander, …succeeded his father at Uilinish, and was Sheriff of Skye
in 1773. He entertained Dr. Johnson and James Boswell at Uilinish
during their tour of the Hebrides in 1773. Boswell writes that the
Sheriff''s house was "a very good farmhouse of two storeys'', and that the
Sheriff himself was ''a plain honest man in brown, much like an English
Justice. His daughter, who was never out of Skye, a very well-bred girl''.
[Boswell: JOURNAL OF A TOUR TO THE HEBRIDES (Pottle''s and Bennett''s
edit.), p. 198.] He also says that ''there is a plentiful garden at Ullinish,
and severl trees''. [Ibid., p. 202.] In the MEMOIRS of his nephew [The full
title is MEMOIRS OF THE LIFE AND GALLANT EXPLOITS OF THE OLD
HIGHLANDER, SERJEANT DONALD MACLEOD (1688-1791). It was
originally published in 1791. A new edition, with notes by J. G. Fyfe,
was published by Blackie & Son Limited, London and Glasgow, 1933.],
Serjeant Donald MacLeod, it is stated that the Sheriff was in 1791 in the
100th year of his age, but this statement is not correct. It would appear
that the Sheriff was married twice, but the names of his wives are
unknown, and he had a numerous family. Those listed here are known to
records.
