Angus Mackie, eldest son of Donald, succeeded his father in the lands
and barony of Farre, and many others in Strathnaver, anno 1395.
In the beginning of the 15th century, Donald, Lord of the Isles, having
been disappointed of the earldom of Ross, to which he thought he had a
good title in right of this wife, raised a great body of men, and laid
waste all Sutherland, Ross, etc. Angus Mackie of Farre raised his
Strathnaver men to oppose him. They came to an engagement near
Dingwall, and a bloody conflict ensued, but at last Mackie, being
overpowered with numbers, was taken prisoner, anno 1410.
The Lord of the Isles keeped him confined for sometime; but at last, he
not only gave him his liberty, but bestowed his daughter upon him in
marriage. He brought her home with him to Strathnaver, and by her had a
son, Neil, his heir.
Some time thereafter Angus raised a considerable body of his vassals
and followers, and invaded Cathness, where he committed vast outrages,
and ravaged and spoiled the whole country, anno 1425.
but king James coming to the north country in person, anno 1426,
Mackie threw himself at his majesty''s feet, and implored his mercy,
who, out of his innate lenity and goodness, granted him pardon, but tookk
his son, Neil, an hostage for the father''s good behavior. He confined him
in the Bass for some months, but st him at liberty anno 1427.
