1. Donald, a man of parts and letters, particularly favoured by King
James VI., at whose command he contributed much towards suppressing
the insolencies of the Macleods of Lewis, and other disorderly
highlanders, and brought them to a higher state of loyalty and
civilization than they had been accustomed to. He married Mary, sister
of kenneth, first Lord Kintail; but dying, without issue, in December
1616, his estate devolved on his nephew.
