!BIOGRAPHY: George Crawfurd, Esq., THE PEERAGE OF SCOTLAND,
Edinburgh, 1716, pp. 437-438.
This noble Earl, for his firm Adherence to King Charles I. had his Estate
iequstrated, and himself excommunicated, and forced to leave the
Kingdom. After the Murder of the King, he repaired to his Majesty King
Charles II. while he sojourned in Holland, who received him graciously,
and made him Principal Secretary of State for Scotland; in which
honourable, tho'' not at that Time very profitable Employment. He died
Anno 1651. [Memoirs of the Family of Seaforth, in the Dedication to the
Lord Seaforth, by Dr. George Mackenzie, in his first Volume of his
Biography, who, I am hopeful will oblige the Nation, by writing at large
the Memoirs of this noble Family, of which he has the Honour to derive
his Descent, and which I know the Dr. is so well supply''d with Materials
for, and for that very Reason I have been the less particular in my
Account of this noble Family, than perhaps I might have been, presuming
that that more exact Work of his will in due Time be communicated to
the World.] He married Barbara, Daughter of Arthur Lord Forbes, by whom
he had George his Son and Heir, Mr. Colin Mackenzie, the Father of my
excellent Friend the Learned Dr. George Mackenzie, who hath already
obliged the World with Two Volumes of a Biography of his learn''d
Countrymen; for whose great Worth and Vertues I have the Esteem which
he has from all the Lovers of his Country, and very deservedly.
!BIOGRAPHY: Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, THE PEERAGE OF
SCOTLAND, Vol. II, Edinburgh, 1813, pp. 481, 483.
XIII. George, second Earl of Seaforth, …was served heir male of his
father Kenneth, Lord Mackenzie of Kintaill, in the lands and barony of
Pluscarden, 14th January 1620, and of his brother Colin, 24th May 1633,
and had charters of Balmungie and Avache, 18th July 1635; of Rasay,
18th February 1637, of the barony of Lewis, 13th March 1637; and of
Lochalsh, 4th July 1642. He joined the association in support of Charles
I. at Cumbernauld, in 1641, and entered into a confederacy for preserving
the national peace, 1646. He was excommunicated by the General
Assembly in June that year, for joining Montrose and adhering to him.
After the execution of the king he repaired to Holland, and was
graciously received by Charles II., who nominated him principal
secretary of state for Scotland, but he died soon afterwards, in 1651.
His Lordship married Barbara, eldest daughter of Arthur, ninth Lord
Forbes, by whom he had issue.
